Western Australia has once again found itself at the forefront of mining technology with researchers at Curtin University discovering a new way to extract platinum metal from ore.
While delivering cost savings using this process, it will also have positive environmental effects, eliminate the use of corrosive salt in processing the ore.
This research delivers a technological advantage to WA’s mining industry and could help companies develop their platinum projects.
Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston was excited by the potential of the new technology on a local scale.
“Western Australia has some of the world’s best researchers, who provide a competitive edge to our State’s mining industry,” Mr Johnston said.
“The cost savings delivered by this new method to extract platinum will support the development of resources in Western Australia that couldn’t be previously extracted.”
